1,200% growth in traffic. 12% more page views. 45% longer sessions. Welcome to the new front door of ecommerce.

Consumers aren’t Googling their way through the buying journey like they used to. They’re chatting their way there.

According to Adobe’s latest analytics report, traffic to U.S. retail websites from generative AI sources—like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini—has exploded 1,200% between July 2024 and February 2025. That number hits 1,950% year-over-year if you zoom in on Cyber Monday.

And here’s the kicker: AI-driven traffic isn’t just growing fast—it’s converting better than you’d expect.

The Catch: AI traffic still lags in raw conversions

Let’s not get carried away. Generative AI referrals are still small potatoes compared to paid search, email, or affiliates in total volume. And yes, conversion rates from AI visitors are still 9% lower than traditional channels.

But that’s a hell of a lot better than the 43% gap Adobe saw back in July 2024. The funnel’s getting tighter.

AI-assisted shoppers:

  • Stay 8% longer on site
  • Browse 12% more pages
  • Bounce 23% less

That’s not noise. That’s a signal. These people are doing real research. They’re more dialed in, more patient, and more likely to come back and buy.

Why it matters: The front of the funnel is moving

Consumers are using AI like a shopping sidekick:

🛒 55% for product research
🔍 47% for recommendations
💸 43% to find deals
🎁 35% for gift ideas
🛍 33% to build shopping lists

And they’re not stopping at retail. AI-driven traffic to:

  • Travel sites is up 1,700%
  • Banking sites is up 1,200%

In travel, bounce rates from AI users are down 45%. In finance, time on site is up 45%. These aren’t accidental clicks—they’re highly qualified users, primed and informed.

Also notable: 86% of AI-driven shopping happens on desktop, versus just 34% of all ecommerce traffic. Turns out people like having a full keyboard when they’re interrogating the AI.

Operator POV: Don’t wait for GenAI to sell for you

If you’re running an ecommerce brand and still treating AI like a sideshow—wake up.

📉 Organic search is eroding.
🤖 Chat-first discovery is rising.
🧠 Top-funnel intent is happening before the click.

If your PDPs, landing pages, and content don’t feed the AI beast, you’re invisible where it matters. You should be asking:

  • Can AI tools understand and recommend your product?
  • Are your SKUs, features, and use cases clearly structured for chat interface parsing?
  • Is your affiliate, PR, and SEO content optimized for AI-scraping and summarization?

Because if you’re not there, your competitor is.

So what?

AI isn’t just changing how people search—it’s changing when and how they decide.

That’s a seismic shift in funnel logic. And the brands who nail their AI touchpoints—clean data, rich content, clear differentiators—are going to capture the new high-intent, high-context shopper.

The SEO wars are over.
The chat funnel wars have begun.
